Leading Surgeons from Moscow and Minsk Perform Operations on Children from Across Kazakhstan
A large-scale medical project, Mumkindik, has concluded in the Atyrau Region, combining specialized medical care for children with hands-on training for Kazakhstani doctors. From August 31 to September 11, leading specialists from Moscow and Minsk consulted and operated on patients with severe surgical and orthopedic conditions. A total of 32 children from different regions of Kazakhstan received medical care.
The project was implemented with the support of BI Group’s BI-Zhuldyzai Corporate Foundation and the Atyrau Region Health Department. All consultations and surgeries were provided to children free of charge.
The first stage of the project focused on pediatric coloproctology. Igor Kirgizov, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, and pediatric surgeon from Moscow, who is recognized as one of the world’s leading specialists in the field, traveled to Atyrau to perform surgeries and conduct master classes.
Under his supervision, 21 children received surgical treatment. Patients traveled to Atyrau from across the region, as well as from Astana, Shymkent, and the Zhambyl, Aktobe, and Mangystau regions. Among them was Fatima, who had been diagnosed with Hirschsprung’s disease, a congenital disorder affecting the large intestine. Before taking part in the project, the girl had undergone four surgeries.
“My daughter and I went through treatment in the infectious diseases department several times before she was finally diagnosed. We were then referred to surgery. I was very worried that they might not be able to take her case because of how complex it was: my daughter was unable to have bowel movements on her own, and she has almost no large intestine. Fortunately, the professor performed the surgery, and everything went successfully. We can already see positive results. We are deeply grateful to the foundation and BI Group for giving us the opportunity to receive care from a specialist of such a high level,” the girl’s mother said.
In addition, Igor Kirgizov consulted 33 children and provided their families with recommendations for further treatment and rehabilitation.
The surgeries also served as hands-on training for Kazakhstani medical professionals. Pediatric surgeons from Semey and districts across the Atyrau Region took part in the master classes. A series of lectures was also held for local pediatricians and doctors from city outpatient clinics.
From September 7 to 11, the project continued under the guidance of Yuri Likhachevsky, Head of the Department of Pediatric Traumatology and Orthopedics at the Republican Scientific and Practical Center for Traumatology and Orthopedics in Minsk and a physician of the highest qualification category.
Under his supervision, children with severe orthopedic conditions underwent examinations, consultations, and planned surgical treatment at the Atyrau Regional Children’s Hospital. The specialist performed 11 surgeries and shared his practical expertise with local orthopedic trauma specialists.
The primary goal of the Mumkindik project is to make highly specialized medical care directly accessible in Kazakhstan’s regions. Families did not have to travel abroad or seek treatment at national medical centers, while doctors in the Atyrau Region were able to learn advanced diagnostic and treatment methods at their own hospital.
BI Group is currently considering opportunities to further develop the project in the region. Together with the Atyrau Region Akimat, the company plans to continue introducing modern treatment methods and expand cooperation with international medical specialists.
The Atyrau project is part of the foundation’s systematic efforts to develop high-tech medical care across Kazakhstan. Since the beginning of 2026, BI-Zhuldyzai has organized 10 visits by international specialists, who have performed 146 complex surgeries on children in Astana, Shymkent, Taraz, Aktau, and Atyrau.
