New Bridge over the Chagan in Uralsk to Be Built under an EPC Contract - Project to Strengthen Regional Transport Connectivity

10 April 2026

A ceremonial capsule-laying event was held in Uralsk at the construction site of a new bridge crossing over the Chagan River. The ceremony was attended by representatives of the West Kazakhstan Region Akimat,  Kazakhstan Road-Research Institute, and the contractor Kazakhdorstroy LLP.

The project is being implemented as part of the construction of access roads to the Akzhayik residential area and includes a 220-meter bridge and nearly 4 km of a new four-lane road with full engineering infrastructure.

The new facility will provide direct transport connectivity between city districts, reduce the load on the existing road network, and improve access to the central part of Uralsk. The project is also considered as part of the future transport system of the city, taking into account the development of bypass road networks.

The bridge will be designed in accordance with modern load and safety requirements and can be used as a backup crossing, including during flood periods.

The project cost has been determined based on updated design solutions. Compared to the 2020 estimates, the route alignment and technical parameters have been refined, engineering conditions have been taken into account, as well as the costs of relocation and construction of utility networks and changes in material and labor costs.

The project is being implemented under an EPC contract, meaning that a single company is responsible for the entire cycle from design to construction. This approach reduces the risk of delays, fixes the project cost, and simplifies quality control, as responsibility is concentrated with one contractor. The project cost is fixed in the contract and is not subject to increase. Financing is carried out in stages, payments are made based on completed and accepted work.

The project also includes an environmental impact assessment and the implementation of the necessary environmental protection measures.

Construction of the bridge crossing will have a significant impact on the city’s transport scheme. First of all, the facility will provide direct connectivity between districts, including the Akzhayik residential area, significantly reducing travel time for residents. Currently, due to the absence of a direct crossing over the river, residents are forced to use detour routes, which increases both travel time and the load on the existing road network. The implementation of the project will allow redistribution of traffic flows and improve access to the city center, including the park and historical part. Thus, the bridge is not just a standalone facility, but an element of forming a more efficient urban transport system”, - project manager Andrey Negriy noted.

Preparatory works will begin in the summer of the current year. Design will be completed in the autumn, and active construction is scheduled to start in 2027.
